How do you care for your overall health and wellbeing when you’re not working? Do you have a tip you’d like to share with your colleagues in education? We’d love to hear from you!
Our wellbeing publication Wellbeing by Teacher launched late last year. Each Saturday morning, we deliver a research-based article to our email subscribers on topics like mental heath, fitness, relationships and sustainability.
Each edition of the newsletter also includes an article called educator insights, where we share recipe ideas, gardening tips, book reviews (and more!) from educators around the country.
It’s widely acknowledged that teaching is a stressful job, which is why it’s so important to take time to care for your health and wellbeing. We’ve loved sharing the strategies you’ve been using to care for your wellbeing while you're not working.
Since we launched Wellbeing by Teacher, we’ve had lots of readers reach out expressing interest in contributing to the magazine. To help you get started, we’ve put together this handy guide on how to get your submission published.
Firstly, you must be an educator working in a school setting to be considered for publication. Contributions are typically 400-800 words in total, and generally include a photo.
Here are the types of articles we’re always chasing:
Recipes
Share a recipe of one of your favourite dishes (preferably a healthy dish). Include a few paragraphs on why you chose this particular recipe, whether you have any special memories attached to it, and where you originally learnt how to make it. It is important that you include a photo of the dish with your submission. Here’s an example.
Book reviews
Supply a book recommendation or review. The article should include why your chose the particular book, a summary of the plot, anything you liked/disliked about the book, and whether you'd recommend it to other readers. It shouldn't be a book that can be used in class with students or one about education, but rather something that you've enjoyed reading in your personal time. It is important that you include a photo of the book with your submission. Here’s an example.
Fitness tips
Write a fitness tip or reflection based on your own experience. It can be about any sport or recreational activity. It should cover why you enjoy this particular sport so much, how often you do it, how you keep motivated and the impact it has on your overall health and wellbeing. It would be great if you could include a tip in there, something you've learned that you think would be useful to share with others. Here’s an example.
Gardening tips
Supply a gardening tip for an upcoming edition. Let readers know what you love most about your garden, how time outdoors impacts your overall sense of wellbeing, and any tips for others who are interested in getting started. Here’s an example.
Finish-the-sentence interviews
This style of contribution allows you to share with readers the ways that you care for your overall health and wellbeing when you’re not working. If you’d like to contribute a finish-the-sentence style interview, please get in touch with the editorial team and we’ll send over the prompts. Here’s an example.
If you’re interested in supplying any of the articles mentioned here, please send a brief overview to our team and we’ll lock your submission into the editorial schedule. We’ll also discuss a deadline to work towards, and explain the process. We look forward to hearing from you!
